Animal Physiotherapy - Applied Herbal Choices - Ecology

We're based in Kent, UK.

Founder | Oliver Parfitt

Oliver runs a mixed species practice working predominantly with dogs and horses. Oliver takes a holistic approach to healing by incorporating another discipline alongside, which is Applied Herbal Choices. As a qualified consultant, this allows him to support veterinary treatment plans on a physical, physiological and psychological/emotional basis.

Veterinary Physiotherapy

What kind of treatments are available for physiotherapy?

There are a variety of treatment options available in terms of manual therapies including land-based exercises.

Specialist equipment such as red/blue light phototherapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy and ultrasound are also used.

Some of the conditions that have been improved through physiotherapy:

  • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
  • Soft tissue injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments such as sprains, strains, rupture or spasm
  • Post trauma/RTA
  • Pain/Discomfort
  • Lameness and gait abnormalities
  • Neurological conditions such as paralysis and ataxia
  • Kissing spine
  • Optimise orthopaedic post-op care
  • General well-being
  • Maintenance and conditioning
  • Wound management to avoid bacterial infection, optimise healing and minimise scarring or proud flesh formation.
  • Optimise healing of fractures
  • Mud fever/rain scald
  • To ease pain associated with chronic degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis

Applied Herbal Choices

What is Applied Herbal Choices and how does it relate to animals?

The medicinal use of plants, soil and clay is seen throughout the animal kingdom, and is a behaviour known as Animal Self-Medication or Zoopharmacognosy.

Deeply entrenched within evolution, animals - including humans to an extent - have the innate ability to identify and self-select specific plants and minerals in response to disease, parasitic infestation or physiological imbalances. Consumption of these compounds may be taken as a preventative measure (prophylactic consumption) or medicinally (therapeutic consumption).

Applied Herbal Choices is a behavioural model that taps into this evolutionary knowledge by offering the patient a selection of herbs (both fresh and dried), with a variety of key essential oils and hydrosols for self-selection.

Conditions which can be improved with Applied Herbal Choices:

Physical Issues:
  • Digestive system
  • Respiratory system
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Integumentary system (skin and coat)
  • Reproductive system
  • Urinary system
  • Endocrine system (hormones)
  • Nervous system
  • Musculoskeletal system
Behavioural and emotional issues:
  • Fear and anxiety
  • Depression and withdrawal
  • Rescue cases
  • Aggression
  • Recovery from an accident, physical trauma or surgery
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Adjustment to new environments
